Updates to the healthy homes standards compliance dates take effect from 26 November 2022.
The Government has extended the timeframe to comply with the Healthy Homes Standards for private landlords, Kāinga Ora and Community Housing Providers who have not yet been required to comply under the healthy homes standards:
- All private rentals must comply with the healthy homes standards within 120 days of any new or renewed tenancy, with all private rentals complying by 1 July 2025
- All houses rented by Kāinga Ora (formerly Housing New Zealand) and registered Community Housing Providers must comply by 1 July 2024
- All boarding houses must already comply with the healthy homes standards, as of 1 July 2021.
- Use the compliance timeframes decision tool to find out when a rental property needs to comply.
You can read details of the changes on our changes to the healthy homes standards information page.
If your rental property already meets the healthy homes standards, you will not need to do any extra work to comply with the changes.
Regardless of their Healthy Homes compliance date, landlords must maintain the rental property in a reasonable state of repair during the tenancy. They must also meet all legal building, health, and safety requirements. Tenants must notify their landlord of any damage or repairs needed at the property as soon as possible after an issue is found.
